famine when the Board of Works employed the local people for six-pence a day or sometimes a pint of meal was their wages. The people had to work very hard as the road had to be made through hills and bogs. It was planned to take the road through Hungerford's wood but as Mr Hungerford was the landlord he would not allow it to be made through his own land, so it had to be cut through a hill. The old Cork road from Goleen through Skibbereen to Cork is still to be seen. A part of it from Toormore on to Ballinaskea chapel, (a convenient road for the people in Toormore to go to the chapel) was improved this year. The new road at Toormore bridge was also improved recently. The tide used to cover the road and cars could not travel there until it receded. A man was drowned there long ago.
