  1. In this district there is no account of ancient crafts except basket making, thatching with straw or reeds, nailmaking and lime-burning.
    A. Home made nails were made by a blacksmith Finn living in Rathglass. They are to be seen still in a part of the floor of Ardatten Catholic Church.
    B. Baskets were made generally. They were made from sallies and were dome shaped capable of holding about three stones of potatoes. Basketmaking is not now carried on.
    C. Thatching is still carried on on the dwelling houses of small farmers by a man called Daniel Byrne but formerly a man called Thomas Roche was supposed to be the best thatcher in Leinster.
