  1. Many years ago there lived in Cavan a rich Squire who owned a fine mansion and rich pasture lands, from which the Irish (tenants) natives had been evicted in the days of his ancestors. The Squire, a celebrated sportsman, spent most of his time in England, rarely visiting this country, unless at the hunting season, when accompanied by a host of friends he would indulge in all sorts of excitement. On a part of the squires estate there stood an old mill, almost in ruins; and which many curious and terrifying stories had been told. The Squire offered a large sum of money to the person who would spend a night there. At length a young man, the only son of his widowed mother, determined, in ordered to provide her
