    and he was in great humour because he was beating the stranger.
    After some time a card happened to fall on the ground and he stooped to lift it; the hair stood on his head when he seen that his partner had a cloven hoof. He did not know how to get away from him, but he thought it best not to let on that he noticed anything. He made an excuse then that it was too late to play any more that night, for that the wife would be only coming looking for him, but, says he, I'll come back to-morrow night and we'll have a night of it. With that he made off and when he looked back there was no trace of the man or the lamp any place.
