    was another famine period when the potato crop again failed. Work called the distress rate "was given by the government and ditches were made along roads in many places. Again meal was supplied gratis to the poor and was known as Parnell's meal" so called because it was obtained from the government by the influence of Charles Stewart Parnell. Bread and clothing was also supplied by his sister Fanny Parnell.
