  1. Long ago people used not go often to a doctor. They sued homemade remedies, and so many of these remedies are still in use.
    The cure for the mumps is to put the winkers of an ass round the sufferer's neck and lead her round the stable three times.
    Warts are cured by rubbing them with nine straws, and then rolling the straws in a tidy parcel and throwing the parcel in the road.
    The first person who lifts the parcel will get the warts.
