  1. Once upon a time there was an old Irishwoman who was quite illiterate. She had a son in America. One time he wrote a letter home to his mother. Not being able to read it herself she brought it to the Parish Priest to read it for her.
    When giving him the letter she also gave him tow pieces of cotton wool saying "Please, your Reverence! will you put this wool in your ears while you are reading this letter, as there might be something private in it.
