Long ago there was an old tree growing near a certain house. The place where the tree was growing was supposed to be haunted and people were seen there every night fighting and cutting off one another's heads.
At last the owner of the house said he would cut down the tree, but he was afraid to touch it himself. Then he thought of a plan and he offered a sum of money to a neighbouring boy if he would cut the tree. He did not consent at first but after a long time thinking he told the man that he would cut it.
He told some of his friends about it and he offered them some of the money if they would give him some help to cut it. He got two friends to join with him, and they started about ten o'clock one night to cut the tree. When he had the tree nearly cut he thought it would fall east, but it fell to the west and the man was under it and it killed him. The other two ran home afraid and told the news to everyone they met.
