Once upon a time there was an old man living in North Clare.

Once upon a time there was an old man living in North Clare. He dreamed three nights after one another that there was gold hidden in a well across the Shannon in Kerry. The following day he went with three neighbours to the place where he dreamt where the money was hidden. They had a spade, a shovel and a pick-axe. When they reached the place they began digging until they met a big stone and they were not able to remove it. At last they began digging in another place and they dug the hole slant-ways and they got under the big stone and dug away until they came to a large round flag and they raised the flag. They found a pot of gold under it and they were closing the hole when they heard a voice behind them saying "Leave it back" and then appeared in front of them a dog with fiery eyes and they had to leave back the gold.
