  1. I live in Scattery Island, a small island on the Shannon outside the town of Kilrush. This island is in the parish of Kilrush, and in the barony of Moyarta. At present there are fourteen houses on the island, five of which are slated and the remaining nine are thatched.
    Scattery Island derives its name from the Irish word "Inis Chathaigh", which means the island of the serpent. Tradition holds that the island was, till the coming of Saint Senan, inhabited by a monster, or Catach, which devoured man or beast that ventured on the place.
