- (continued from previous page)the sound of horses hoofs in the distance and great cheering and shouting; what came into sight round the turn but a wedding party! The men riding on the horse-back and the women pillion riding behind them, as was the custom in those early days. After the ceremony in their place of worship, they used to rave against each other to the home of the bride where the winner was awarded with a bottle of whiskey. "Johnny Fatty" was so frightened that when he heard and saw the party coming he jumped to his feet and ran home to his mother and was able to walk ever after that.
- Very many years ago towards the end of the 17th Century I believe: Jonathan Swift, ( who afterwards became the famous Dean of St Patrick Cathedral Dublin) taught school in the house facing Cornakill school and owned and occupied at present by John Fitzsimons. In those times the pupils used to bring turves to school instead of coal money as they do nowadays.The boy who bought the biggest turf would be acclaimed by the teacher the best scholar that day.Mr Jonathan Swift sat before the huge fire of turf with a large bowl of punch at his elbow,(continues on next page)
