    The groves were green and valleys of charm once more in their glory do bloom
    As the great Cavan team like the sweet air of Erin
    Leaped forth from its dark-shroud of gloom
    The laurels from the lakes of Killarney
    Was caught by the Shannon's first wave,
    As her crest foamed high in sweet harmony
    With the flowers of young Breffni the brave.

    With a dash from the glen those gallant young men
    Courageous, heroic, and grand,
    Across the wide sea to the land of the free
    Like a staunch and true athletic band,
    With a cheerful smile of their dear beloved Isle
    No combat these heroes did crave,
    To greet their dear friends and comrades exiled
    Came the flowers of young Breffni the brave

    Now the sun's golden rays grew dim o'er the green
    And glory was mingled with shade
    As defeat was the fate of New York's Gaelic team
    They resorted to a fistic blockade,
