  1. The Weather - Weather-Lore
    I. A red sky is a sign of good weather. "Goots hair" as small white clouds are called locally are the sign of rain. If the sun sets red it is a sign of good weather. If the stars are very bright and sparkling it is a sign of frost. A rain - bow in the morning is a sign of rain therefore "A rain - bow in the morning is the sailor's warning". And a rain - bow in the evening is a sign of good weather so a rain - bow in the eventide makes a shepherd satisfied" and a rain - bow at night is a sailors delight". Big dark clouds are a sign of rain. If there is a ring round the moon it will rain.
II. The wind form the east is always cold and it brings diseases. South west wind brings rain. North wind brings snow and frost.
III. Swallows and crows flying low is a sign of rain. Sea-gulls screaching and curlews whistling are a sign of rain. If a dog eats grass or snores it is a sign of rain or if you see a cat sitting with her back to the fire it is a sign of rain. If a goat comes home in the middle of the day it will be rain and if you see her going out again it is a sign that it will clear.
IV. A mist on a lake is a sign of good weather or if the water seems blue at a distance it is for good weather. A mist on land is a sign of good weather too. If you see dust rising off the road it is a sign of rain and wind.
    V. Midges in the evening are a sign of rain or if you see a cricket going outside it is a sign of good weather, but he rings inside for rain.
