  1. Candle Making Long Ago
    Eighty years ago people in this country used what they called Pith candles or Rush lights to show them light in their houses at night.
    The candles were made in the following way. They cut a bundle of strong rushes. The outside part was peeled off and the the white inside pith was dried They then melted some tallow and mixed some resin through it. The pith of the rush was cut into lengths of six or seven inches. Each piece was dipped in the melted tallow. The pieces were then hung up until the tallow round the rush got firm. They were then dipped again and again hung up to dry. This
