  1. In the year 1887 a great tragedy took place in a lake near Shercock Co Cavan called Lough Sillan.
    The tragedy occurred on the 27th July. On that day Master McCabe who was the teacher in Cullies school took fourteen of his pupils and his wife and another teacher out in a boat for a sail. They were not very far out on the lake until the water started to come in over the edge of the boat. When the girls saw this they all gathered around the Master for protection. He told them to sit quiet and he would take them back to the shore safely but they would not. The boat sank and they were all drowned. One girl who was in the boat before it left
