  1. Long ago the houses were thatched and some houses had wooden roofs and felt on top.
    In olden times, the houses had beds in the kitchen.
    The fire-place was mostly at the gable wall, and the front of the chimney was plaited with sallies, and mortar was pasted between them.
    Some houses had no windows and the door was left open in the daytime and shut at night.
    Long ago the floors were made of clay of and of blocks of wood.
