  1. Long ago in the days of Cromwell, a beautiful castle was to be seen on the border of Ballyhoe Lake.
    Very wealthy people lived in this castle and had much gold hidden in a cellar. They kept it here in this secret place, lest the people should steal it.
    One day, they heard that some people were coming to rob them. Rather than let these enemies get their treasure, they threw it into Ballyhoe Lake.
    People say this gold still remains at the bottom of the lake.
