  1. During the time of the famine when the potato crop failed it affected the poor farmers in Ireland and all that were depending for food on this crop. A great many died of starvation on that account as they had no other food or any money to buy it.
    The Government through the board of works had to help the people in many places. There is a road about 1/4 of a mile from my house which was cut through a hill during that time. They had a big boiler in which they made Indian meal stirabout and gave it to the people as payment for making the road. This hill gets the name "Stirabout Hill" ever since.
