    The Rising of Mullagh.
    In the year 1869 Fr.John Conaty, P.P. Mullagh bought at public auction the gates and piers leading to the Glebe House, which was then The Rectory, after the death of the protestant Minister Mr. Caffrey. These gates were then erected at the entrance to the Catholic Church at Mullagh. Some time afterwards Fr. Conaty got notice by letter that the gates would not be allowed to remain at the Catholic Church and that they would be removed by force if necessary.
    The Priest made this known to the congregation at Mass on Sunday, asked them to defend the Church property if attacked, and told them that the ringing of the Church bell would be the summons. It was generally expected that the attack would be made on 12th July after Orange celebrations at Baileboro and excitement ran high.
    On July 12th, four strong men were deputed to ring the Church bell and send out the signal. Fenianism was not dead in the district and some arms were available. Thousands of men flocked in from all quarters armed with guns, pikes, forks - anything with a blow in it. They were drilled
