- There were small shops in the district, but they sold only tobacco and bread and other small things. When people wanted to make purchases they had to go to the nearest town.
Long ago fairs used to be held on Sunday. After Mass sometimes tobacco or the daily paper used to be sold. Money was not always given for goods, sometimes eggs and chickens were given in exchange for goods. Labour was given in exchange for goods.
The word "Tick" was used when a thing was bought on credit. When two things were being swopped money was given along with the smaller article. This money was called "Boot". People selling second hand clothes always start at a high price and then they bring it down to the value of the article. This is called "Cant".
Men known as rag-men used to come round and gather rags and feathers.(continues on next page) - Collector
