  1. A short period after the great war nearly every country in the world was attacked by a deadly flu.
    In our own county some families were wiped out and four and five of other families died. Nearly everybody was sick at the same time.
    In the big cities there were several funerals every day. The schools were closed for months, they were re-opened and they had to be closed again.
    In the big business houses all the assistants were laid up and the business had to be closed.
    So dreadful were these months that people say they saw two funerals at a time in this locality.
    Every Winter since there is a mild form of flu but it was never so bad as it was in nineteen hundred and eighteen.
