    At dinner-time, long ago the people collected...

    At dinner-time, long ago the people collected round a basket of potatoes which was placed sometimes on a table, and sometimes in the floor. There was a noggin of milk for everyone. Each person took a potatoe and peeled it with his fingers, a spoon, or a knife. He placed a piece of butter in this, sometimes or sprinkled it with salt and then ate it. He then washed it down with a draught of buttermilk or sweet-milk
