  1. The Local Fairs
The local fairs around our district are held at Cavan, Ballyjamesduff and Kilnaleck.
They are nearly all held in towns, except Kilgolagh, where they are held on a hill-side.
People used to pay toll, if they wanted to get in, if they would they would not get in.
In Kilgolagh, in County Westmeath, they used to pay toll, and it was according to the price of the beast, three pence or six pence.
If a man wanted to go in, he had to pay this and if he sold a beast the other man had to pay going out, and often the man that sold the beast came out with it again so as that the man would not have to pay on the beast.
The hiring fair is held in May and November, and that time men are hired for the half-year.
When an animal is sold the people clap their hands together as a sign of agreement.
A lot of fairs are now discontinued which were long ago, for example "Crosskeys" Co Cavan in which there were fairs held long ago, and is now discontinued.
There are ? at the fair also
