  1. The most frequent time that marriages take place is before Lent and during Shrove. The Roman Catholics think it unlucky to get married during Lent and the moth of May and on any Friday or Shrove Tuesday. There is some match making made in this district. Money is given as dowry.
    Ban-beggars or straw-men go to the bride's house the night she gets married getting money. They get false faces and suits of straw and puts them on so that the people of the house would not know them. The people of the house give the ban-beggars bread and money and they dance and play music at the door. They have a captain who gives them their orders and in olden times each one danced with the bride, but nowadays most people go away for their
