  1. In Mountprospect near Mountnugent , Co. Cavan there was a man living whose name was Mr. Dempsey. He had a fine slated house and there was a lawn in front of it. He had fifty great strong horses working every day. When he would put them into the stables at night, and close the door and lock it he would find them that night galloping through the lawn. He would get up out of bed and go to the stable, the horses would not be there and there would be no sign of them in the lawn. He would go back to the house and go back to bed and when he would get up in the morning and go to the stable the horses would be there and the sweat rolling down of them and their legs would be all dirt and mud. At last he found out that fairies would be riding those horses at night. One day when he was coming in his carriage four of those horses which were drawing the carriage along, took off the path which was in the middle of the lawn and went through the lawn. When
