    The old National School
The old National School in Killeshandra was at the other end of the town from the present one. It was above the teacher's house and was reached by a flight of stone steps up the end wall.
A man named Johnston taught in it. He was a stranger to the district. The subjects taught were - Reading, Writing and Arithmetic. Irish was not taught or spoken. Slates and slate pencils were used by the young children. From second standard upwards the children wrote in books. Desks and blackboards were used in the school.
