  1. "Snuffing" and "Helping"
    These rush lights needed constant attendance. The portion above the Clip soon was used up, the candle-tender then pulled it up a little with the fingers of left hand, holding the clip open with the right. This was called "helping" The waste on the top had to be removed also. The mother &c would say Help and Snuff the candle.
