- Shops were not so common in the country in olden as in present time. People often had to go to the nearest town to make purchases.
Buying and selling were never carried on after Mass. Money was not always given for goods, sometimes labour was given in exchange. In olden times hucksters, pedlars, and dealers in rags visited the district. In olden times the markets was held in the towns or at crossroads. The four penny piece is gone out of use. In olden a shilling was called a bob, and a sixpence was called a kid's eye.
