  1. The implements needed for thatching were a ladder, a small iron rake, a pair of shears, a knife, and a wooden mallet. Another name for a layer is a "bed". He used a mallet for bending the scallops, and for driving the scallops into the thatch. He trimmed the eye with a pair of shears.
