- Rush candles were all that people had for giving light long ago. First, the rushes were gathered, and they were left to dry. After a few days, they were peeled, and a little strip was left, to not let the candle burn too quickly. They boiled the centre part in grease or lard, which was melted in a small vessel, in the shape of a boat, called a "grisit" or a "twizer". Then, they were left to dry. When they were dry, and when the lard was dried into the rushes, they burned freely, when lighted. The vessel in which they were left to dry, was called a "loosed". There were holders specially made for the purpose of holding the rush candles.
