- I have a churn at home it is made of oak there are four legs on it. It is the same at the top as at the bottom. It has five hoops and a handle on one side. It is about twenty five years old. The makers name is on one side of the churn. Butter is made twice a week in the Summer and once a week in the Winter. My Mother and my Sister do it. People that come in help with the churning. Sometimes it takes a half an house and other times it takes over an hour. You know when the butter is made there is a glass on the top of the churn and you can see when it is finished there is a screw lid on it. Sometimes water is put in to help to churn the milk. Butter is taken off with a strainer there is a proverb "Long churning makes tough butter" . Butter milk is given to calves.
