  1. In olden times the houses of the district were usually thatched, and a lot of these still exist especially in the mountains: and the people have no idea of exchanging them for slate roofs. The thatch was procure from the corn-fields. Half doors were common in those days and there are a lot of these
    half-doors are still existence, even in slated houses. As a fuel, wood and turf was used:
    Candles and rushlights were used at night.
    Most of these old houses had hard clay floors.
    Those old houses were mainly cottages, and were usually long and narrow.
