- Festival CustomsSt. Brigid's Day is regarded as a special day for the Station at Uactar Dí near Ballinamore where there is a holy well. It is customary to bring some water from the well or a piece of a branch from one of the trees growing at the place. These emblems are hung in the house until the following year.
St Patrick's Day - shamrock is worn.
Ash Wednesday - It is customary to go to Mass and get on Ashes.
The following Sunday is called [Sweet] Sunday. All the eligible boys and girls who have not got married before Lent are seen that day.
May Day - In former times it was customary to collect primroses on May Eve and scatter them around the doorsteps and on a hawthorn branch stuck in the manure heap. It was also believed that butter and milk could be "taken" that morning. To prevent this happening a branch of(continues on next page)
