  1. 5. About forty years ago a well-attended Market was held each Saturday in Swanlinbar. A great variety of goods was always for sale. It happened that one market day a woman named McGoldrick from Altachullin went to the market with butter and bought a large eel from a Fish Merchant. She brought home the eel in her butter basket - apparently on open one. On her way home, two miles from Swanlinbar on the "Church Road" she began to feel rather weak and short of breath. She managed to walk a short distance but in the end she collapsed. A man named Pat McGovern, Drumcask happened to see her fall and came to her assistance.
    He took off the shawl she wore and discovered that the eel had crept out of the basket and entwined itself so tightly around her body as to cause her to faint.
