- The Potato CropPotato is the most common crop grown in this locality. Each farmer's crop varies each year. An acre is the usual amount under potato crop. In February the ground is ploughed with an iron plough. It is made into ridges or drills. Then it is harrowed and the potatoes are planted. When the potatoes are peeping over the ground the manure is put out and spread on the ridges. Then it is scored with a plough and the manure his covered with a shovel. A few weeks later it is shovelled secondly.During the summer the blight often appears. The farmer procures a barrel of water. In this he steeps a mixture of bluestone and washing soda. He leaves it to steep overnight. Then he sprays it over the stalks of the potatoes with a spraying machine. If the blight appears again the crop is sprayed secondly. The potatoes are dug in the Autumn. If the potatoes are planted in drills they are dug with a "digger". If they are in ridges The men dig them with spades. The spades are not made locally but are bought(continues on next page)
