1. Food in Olden Times

   Long ago the people did not eat as many meals as they eat now though the food was much cheaper. The people in olden times did not know much about any kind of food except potatoes milk and bread. The general meals were the breakfast, dinner and supper. These were eaten respectively at eight o clock, two o clock and eight o clock. The breakfast consisted of porridge and tea. The porridge was mostly made of indian meal - sometimes oaten.

   The dinner consisted of potatoes, salt and buttermilk. This was mostly in poor houses, but in places, cabbage and bacon were boiled together and all was eaten with the water. People were known to work in the morning before eating and often travelled many miles. Buttermilk was very common in olden times because there were no creameries, the people churned all their milk and porringens of it were drank in the day.

   Long ago the people nearby never used tables when eating. Sometimes they sat round a basket of potatoes which they took to their dinner. When they sat round a table it was generally a '' fallen '' one which was near the wall and when they were finished they
