  1. In olden times country shops were very few and the people had to go to the nearest town which was about four miles away.
    Buying or selling was never carried on after Mass in the district. Pedlars were not very common in this district : - One of them was Paddy Reilly who lived in Templeport used to go around the country selling religious pictures clothes and suit lengths.
    Another one was Jenny McGovern who used to go around the country with a cart selling pins, needles, brooches and a lot of fancy things. Tommy McVicar was a man who used to buy scrap iron, rags, feathers and horse hair. He also took bottles if he got them.
    People were known to travel many miles on foot with firkins of butter and baskets of eggs, to Enniskillen and even to Sligo. When they used to go to Enniskillen they brought back what they wanted for household use, such as :- tea, sugar, salt and flour. Stuff was very cheap in these times until free trade was stopped.
