  1. A man and his wife were living in a small house. The man went to the fair and bought a calf. When he came home he had nowhere to graze the calf. He put the calf up on the roof of the little thatched house to eat the grass. It was not long till the calf fell down and was killed. "Now" said the man "We have a piece of meat for every head of cabbage in the garden". The man went to the town and bought a bag of flour and a cask of beer. When he came home his wife had cut up the meat of the calf and had put a piece of meat on every head of cabbage in the garden. Soon the dogs began to take the meat off the cabbage. The woman saw this and pulled the tap out of the cask of beer to throw it to the dogs. Then the beer was spilled on the floor. The woman spilled the flour on the floor to dry it up. When the man saw this he said, "There is no use in trying to live here. You may put out the fire and bring the
