  1. Old Cures
    Toothache -
The flag which grows by the river was a cure for the toothache by putting a slice of the stem on the tooth. A slice of garden beet was used in the same way.
    Coughs -
Lozenges were made and used by old people for coughs
    Bleeding from cuts -
When people cut their hands they chewed rib-grass and put it on the cuts: this was said to stop the blood.
A cobweb was also used to stop the blood: they twisted round a cut finger.
    Colds -
Butter melted in scalded buttermilk cured colds. Oatmeal boiled in buttermilk sweetened with sugar.
    Sore throat -
Saltwater. A stocking which the person have worn that day wrapped around the throat going to bed.
