  1. Bread
The bread long ago was made from oats and wheat.
This bread was moisten with water and no salt was put in it. It was usually baked in front of the fire standing up against a support.
When the bread was baked the people broke it with the handle of a knife as it was very hard. They made no special kind of bread on any occasion.
The different kinds of bread that were made were patato cakes and turnip cakes.
The people baked two cakes each day.
