    About 100 yards to the north of Mr Doyle's house at Talbotstown is situated Talbotstown fort. Judging by its size (about a statute rood) and how well protected it was, it must have been a very important fort at one time.
    It is circular in shape, and is surrounded by a deep trench filled with water. The water at one time must have reached to a depth of five or six feet.
    The outer surface of the rath is solidly built of earth and stone, and this wall of stone still stands as firmly as when it was built.
    There is now no opening on the inside of the fort. Mr Doyle told me he heard old people who lived about the place say there were two openings with passages from them leading to several chambers underground.
    He also told me that there is an entrance hole leading to the interior of these chambers, just above the water level in the trench on the west side of the outer wall. This opening is now hidden by trees and briars. It is just large enough to admit a man's body, and having crawled through it you must then crawl up through another opening rather like a chimney in order to get to
