- Festival Customs1. St. Stephens Day. Some of the boys some around from house to house with a wren on a furze bush or a holly bush, and they have the tree decorated with coloured paper. One of the boys carries the tree and another plays tunes with a mouth-organ.Then they sing a son of the wren and the song they sing is:The wren, the wren, the king of all birds,
St. Stephens day she was caught in the furze.
All though she is small her family is great,
Up with young ladies and give her a treat.
Up with the kettle, and down with the pan,
A penny or two pence to bury the wren,
A hat ful of money a heartful of cheer,
I hope you had a happy Christmas and a bright New Year.The people of the house give them a penny or two pence. Then they share the money between them and go and spend it in a public house and make a(continues on next page)
