  1. Long ago, there was a great deal of craft-work in the country, basket-making, whip-making, gate-making and thatching.
    A basket was made by getting a bundle of hazel sticks and plaiting them around one another.
    A whip was made by getting a long stick and a long piece of leather thong, about three times the length of a "fung". It was tied on to the stick.
    Until lately, the blacksmiths always made gates. The person who wanted the gate made gave any old iron there was around the place, to the blacksmith.
