  1. I have heard very little about Hedge schoolmasters, but I have heard they have been in secret places all over Ireland, sometimes in an old barn and in cow-houses, farm-houses and under sheltery places in hedges.
    It is from being under hedges they derived the name. My great grand Uncle taught school at a sheltered hedge in Co. Sligo in the townland of St. James' Well. He was a native of Co. Roscommon, but he had to leave it on account of spies.
