- It is the custom, that on Saint Stephens day, boys or grown ups get a holly-bush and decorate it with cards and toys, and sometimes they have a wren in the centre of the bush. They go around from house to house singing a little rymn:
The wren, the wren,
The king of all birds,
St. Stephens day she was,
Caught in a furze,
Although she was little,
Her family was great,
Rise up landlady,
And give us a treat,
Up with the kettle,
Down with the pan,
Give us our answer,
And let us be on.
In some houses they get money. When they are finished they count the money and divide it among them all.
The feast of Saint Brigid is on the 1st of February.(continues on next page)
