  1. "To be properly yoked to clane oats you must have a barn riddle, a sieve and a boorawn.
The riddle was made with an ash rim laced across with half inch splinters of oak and with a half inch mesh.
The sieve was made the same way but it had a smaller mesh.
The boorawn was made with an ash rim too an it was covered with a calf or a cow skin.
A very windy day was selected for the claning The long straw and coarse stuff was taken off with the riddle. The oats was then filled into the boorawn by a chap and a man held the sieve about the height of his chest and the chap [thrun?] in the oats. The man gave a circular motion to the sieve by shaking it and the oats fell through the sieve & the wind carried away the chaff.
A barn riddle was about three feet across & a sieve about two & a half feet. I used them myself but they are out of use now about 50 years
