  1. About a hundred years ago boots were unknown in this country - brogues & clogs were generally worn. Brogues were coarse shoes having their leather soles stitched to the uppers with leather thongs. The ancient clogs were merely wooden soles with straps & buckles by means of which they were fastened on the feet.
    Children went barefoot until they were quite grown up & it was a common thing to see
