Near the Slaney & off Abbey Street stands the ruins of an old Abbey. This is supposed to have been built by the Normans for their Norman priests. When E. Bruce came to Ireland his soldiers knocked it down.
The abbey was rebuilt & the Doynes lived in it until it was accidently burnt some years ago. There is supposed to be an underground passage from the Abbey to the castle which was in the place now known as Castle Hill. This castle was built by Hugh De Lacy
