  1. About sixty six or seven years ago, there was a school over the stables of Mr. Humphreys in Burton Hall. The children around the district attended it. It was a mixed school. A teacher by the name of Miss Hogan of Killerig taught there for four years, and then Miss Lawler of Rathvilly taught there. Only English books were used.

  2. The ruins of an old school are to be seen in Oak Park Demesne. It was situated in the centre of a large wood with paths leading to it in all directions. The teachers were sisters, and they taught both Catholic and Protestant children. The teachers kept only two small books, and nearly all the teaching was done under
