- During the 17th & 18th centuries our land was soaked in the blood of priests and people, who died for the Catholic faith.
Then the Mass was banned and anyone known to assist at the Holy Sacrifice was severely punished and the Priest was put to death.
Yet, in spite of these Penal Laws, Mass continued to be offered in out-of-the way places all over the land.
When going to Mass the people avoided the main roads - they travelled along "By-roads" or through fields and these were called Mass Paths.
There is one of these Mass Paths in Kealy's field in Scorth - it led to the old chapel in Clonegoose. From that chapel there was an underground passage leading to a clump of tress in Kilcloney. This tunnel was probably a "Get away" for priest and people when surprised by soldiers or by spies.
There is an underground chapel in St. Mullins where Mass was said during the Penal Days. When, in July, people go to the pattern, they visit this(continues on next page)
